Why do I get back pain in the morning? Stiff joints or tired muscles?

Hi, so this video is about a quick question
a patient asked me in clinic the other day. They wanted to know why their back pain was
worse in the morning. More specifically, they wanted to know why it was so bad that they
couldn’t put their socks on first thing in the morning, but then by, in fact by lunchtime
they were able to get their toes to touch their nose. Now there’s actually a couple of factors with
this patient as to why there was such a big variability, one of which being that they
were… that was just my little boy waking up there!
So um one of the reasons was because they are hypermobile, so that’s why they were able
to at lunch time to get their toes to their nose. And most of us can’t! But the general
that we work by in clinic is that, and this is really broad, but the pain in the morning
is to do with joints, and pain in the evening is to do with muscles. So first thing in the
morning, we’re feeling stiff, we’re uncomfortable, we haven’t been weightbearing, we haven’t
got good movement patterns going yet so pain can be caused by those stiff restricted joints.
youve been lying down in bed, most of us don’t have the most brilliant mattresses in the
world, we’re cold so that fluid in the joints can be quite viscous and then that can lead
to the stiffness and discomfort. And effectively you just haven’t warmed up yet first thing
in the morning. So roughly speaking the general rule is if your pain is worse in the morning
then its going to be joint related which means you’re going to want to be looking at mobilising
and and decompressing that joint. If your pain is worse in the evening then that’s to
do with that muscle fatigue, you’re wanting to strengthen the joint, and to try and make
sure that the muscles can repair and recovery appropriately. So if you find that your back
pain is worse in the morning then get yourself up and about for a few minutes. Get yourself
your cup of tea, cup of coffee, like this, and then I normally recommend about 20mins
after you get up, maybe after you have had a shower, then do some mobility drills. For more information contact us at www.headstartclinics.com
