Spinal Injury on Atlantic Crossing (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 135

Spinal Injury on Atlantic Crossing (Sailing La Vagabonde) Ep. 135

Do you want to just explain what’s happened? I’ve never really explained on the channel about the time I broke my neck in Brazil So easy provisioning for just two yeah And we’re off people, this is epic and sun, how lucky are we? Last week we were surprised by howling wind in our anchorage forcing us to pull up anchor and look for shelter elsewhere This tends to happen on the leeward side of steep islands in the trade winds We headed south to marina rubicon where Josje jumped off and continued on her own adventure Bye, bye, love you, love you too Then we got stuck into job after job in preparation for our big Atlantic crossings What are we doing this morning Bookey? I’m just getting the last of my travel shops It’s a very calm day, so we’re both gonna jump in the What is this? Cunningham the Third? second. I’m not sure of the correct lineage Don’t sound so professional we’re going to the doctors In the dinghy. Its way down there but it’s good. It’s a nice calm day so we’ll be able to burn down there, come on! I was just freaking out so hard about Riley getting a needle that I didn’t even film in the doctor’s But how’d you go Riles? yeah, good clean bill of health and Inoculated well let’s hope you don’t get a rash all over your face Oh my gosh thats a big wake Don’t get too close smarty pants im trying to get out of the way Riles you won’t make it They thought they could beat us So the trade winds are the Prevailing wind pattern going from east to west they’re consistent enough that a whole bunch of different people Congregate in places like this before going across the Atlantic There’s another lot of trade winds that operate in the Pacific the ones that we’ve got here are going from Africa to the Caribbean It means that most of the people that you meet all in the same boat so to speak. It’s good to see a Whole bunch of different people all with the same sort of goal in mind Its time to set up Elayna, and Riley With only a day or two left here in Lanzarote. We couldn’t leave without having first dived a site called the Museo Atlantico a bunch of sculptures place on the ocean floor designed to generate an artificial reef So Steve the legend has let us borrow his car today, and we’re gonna go and get lots of stuff done So hopefully we can disappear in the next day or two be good to get out of this little area anyway for a drive forgot to get the bags for shopping oh the shopping bag So we don’t waste plastic bags I have a gas bottle, it’s just about this big. It’s French propano? no but a only buta Solo butano? All right, so what’s the deal? They said it’s only butane which if you remember off the last boat Elayna if you run butane through a propane System, which is what we’ve got what we did on the old boat, you get soot
yeah, that’s right we got soot everywhere all over the dishcloths so we could either fill it up with butane and deal with the soot or go with whatever we think is left in the other bottle and Risk a bit of.. we could cook some pasta, in a pot on the engine oh You can do that I don’t know if I’m willing to risk this.. so they’re our options I reckon just get a butane Roger I reckon we might not even have to use it But then what do we do with it? We’d give it away to someone who likes butane and likes their soot and likes soot all over their dishes and dishcloths We’re not being very efficient today are we Riley and I are picking on each other today, so he’s not helping me with the trolley and its really really hard Did you buy proper bread making stuff this time, or was it bread crumbs again No, I got the right stuff this time Don’t destroy the eggs on the bottom of the pile again Alright, we have to stop now, things are getting heated we can just be nice? its been a big day Safe to say we have got enough to last us a very very long time so easy provisioning for just two don’t know where we’re gonna fit all of this stuff One last thing we’ve got to do Elayna, We’ve gotta go to the Chinese shop There is no room for Chinese takeout. I promise you there is in my freezer. No same thing I did when I was solo sailing. Oh yeah. I had a bunch of take away all right. If thats what you wish, ill stay here and keep cleaning up Yeah So im going to get one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, ill get eight So can i get, a tofu with chinese sauce, a tofu with spicy sauce, vegetables and red curry, vegetables in green curry Good luck on sailing to Caribbean Thank you very much, thanks Ned, Cheers, what’s that? I can only get two in there Oh they don’t fit, huh? Fail, I told you they’re not gonna fit We’re gonna have to eat them oh bugger I could probably eat them all tonight and tomorrow anyways I don’t know what you’re worried about.. no thats a waste, we’ve got, na Well there’s two in there, I’m can put two in there, then I’ve got four left I can eat two tomorrow and two the next day.. okay, yeah Just gonna clean the last of the hull, sun’s just gone over the horizon, and it’s been raining all night, so But we’ll get this done, and then we’ll head off im um.. good consistent winds for the trip so im Then we’ll be right there coffee Aqui, or maybe this one you reckon it will fit through there? No not really Can you push? Alright This is a dangerous game Nah nah? abort mission. I’ll meet you at the front alright bit of an oversight by Outremer isn’t it? They haven’t made their trampoline holes big enough for coffee Apparently not come on Mattieu all right there you go. Thank you very much Not exactly ideal for leaving is it? oh, just pull, dont need to twist Elayna Ohhh, we’re leaving So Riley’s gonna jump in the water and scrape the rest of the hull While I go and check us out of the country, and I do feel really terrible about it Still defrosting? Yeah My feet aren’t numb anymore And we’re off people All right, Do you want to tell everyone about the naughty-naughty that we did? we didn’t check out of Europe which is a big one. We needed to leave today because we had a like the perfect weather window and we went to check you out, which we’ve been told that you can do that at the marina office there and it turns out that today for some reason you have to go to a different town It’s not it’s not the first time we haven’t checked in or out of somewhere, but I guess we’ll see what happens. We’re going to Antigua and I guess we’ll arrive and just be like “Hey man, we’re citizens of the world”. They’ll be like “go straight to jail do not pass go” The smell of land subsided as we headed further and further out into the deep blue There would be nothing apart from the occasional flying fish for two thousand seven hundred and seventy two nautical miles So usually on the first night, I cannot sleep when we’re sailing Just cuz you know I’m a little bit nervous, and there’s that little bit of stress, and it’s just something in my brain Just won’t shut down always on the first night, but the second day I’m fine, but like I just wanted to film this to tell you that well people want to see more real shit So this is real. This is me feeling shit I’m trying to get to sleep, but it’s not happening I’ll take care of it Riley always takes care of it for the first day and im really lucky and I love you lots Riles That’s alright, I’m just happy to have you on board anyway attempt number 27 this afternoon So the first drama that we’ve got is whether to go north or south of Tenerife because of the way the wind is and the waves and everything it’s sort of pushing us south of there But I know south of the island we’re going to have inconsistent winds and it’s more a matter of comfort I think that we’re gonna turn into the breeze and head north of there But that’s gonna happen right in the middle of the night, so Elayna is having a bit of a snooze here So I think that’ll be Elayna’s job 24, 24 knots apparent. What is it? 24 apparent good morning all Its been one of those nights We’ve been tacking into the wind because we can either go under or over the Canary Islands so I’ve got Tenerife to the left of me right now and all morning I’ve just been like pinching degrees here and there Trying to avoid another tack and just trying to get over the top of the island so that’s been fun Riley’s asleep lucky him and Yeah, there’s some bad weather coming at 1:00 o’clock, but I’ve just spotted a bunch of dark clouds and the wind is just starting to pick up we’re supposed to get 30 knots of wind today, so bets are.. and its only 11am, so i reckon this is it Bonjour Mademoiselle this is epic, got the tradewinds finally Got your winds you wanted? yup and sun, how lucky are we? and there is a mountain back there I always experience this overwhelming sensation of freedom each time I leave sight of land Unlike many other forms of travel with no buses or planes to catch the time and date soon becomes irrelevant out here all that’s important is checking the weather the sailing food and sleep I find it interesting how the days start to blur into one and it’s only the significant events that seem to separate them Do you want to just explain what’s happened? Me and Elayna were having a bit of an argument, and I went to walk off and fell over and Just totally head-butted the chair I’ve never Really explained On the channel about the time I broke my neck in Brazil. I paralyzed My left arm For a while and it was a very distinct feeling all pins and needles went up my arm, and I freaked out again because the Same thing happened, and I grabbed my neck and I said oh My neck my neck that just happened so quickly and I honestly I just thought the worst and I was gonna turn the boat around and go back to the Canary Islands we’re about 350 miles out from the Canary Islands and The wind’s blowing us towards the Caribbean So we can try and turn around and go back

Was würde passieren, wenn Er damit in ein Krankenhaus müsste? Es geht nur Cash oder Kreditkarte! Ansonsten lassen die einen liegen! Da beide nicht arbeiten – woher käme das Geld?

What a joy to find your channel. Watching your adventures reminds me of early years when I spent a lot of time on different bodies of water with my family! Cheers. Mike

Riley..I'm thinking about watching you lift the dinghy motor onto yr right shoulder yesterday, which was SO FOOLISH! I was in the kitchen making coffee, hobbling around, my iPad propped up, and muttering "No no no! Get help"Never just muscle thru on yr own. Accept help, or you'll end up like me, lying down too much & watching these videos, getting more weakened and incapacitated as the years go by. Stop this behavior, please. Now you're in pain & youre both in danger. This was hard to watch, but endearing, of course. I'm only on my 3rd week, watching, and have grown so very fond of you both. I don't want to see you suffering chronic pain later in life like me. I fell off a ten foot ladder, painting a design on a ceiling, leaning too far out, not wanting to climb down for the billionth time to move the ladder. Also, fallen off scaffolding, and hauled thousands of pounds of stuff, doing decorative painting & delivering big furniture pieces. A hand truck, Dolly, or an ASSISTING HAND would've prevented these botched surgeries, my friend. Numb feet, ruined spine, many ruptured discs, neuropathy, and destroyed wrists & hands. I am NOT LumberJill after all, any more. Please don't lift anything that gives you pause, ever again! Be well.💖💕

When I flew in Jamaica 18 years ago. During my aircraft walk around I would notice at certain times of the year a yellow sandy film on the leading edge of the wing. Which was the desert dust from the Sahara carried aloft by those trade winds you describe. Mother Nature is all power and are knowledge her is still waining.

Just a couple of items for Elayna to check out for health at sea. # 1 Astaxanthin ~ it is taken internally and has many benefits one of which it protects skin from sun damage from within.

DMSO ~ Thought of the spinal injury or swelling in the head or anywhere on the body. It will remove the fluids from the injured area, preventing further damage. It is one of the best treatment for spinal injuries or truly any sprain, break of bone, stroke and more. It works with safe sulfur and oxygen. It will penetrate tooth enamel and bones to get your healing oils to where they need to be as it is also a solvent. One precaution: because it is a powerful carrier of clean things for the body, it would carry toxins in also. NO lotions made of petroleum or toxic substances. I have only recently been watching your videos, started halfway through your adventure with your catamaran. Plan to "Tarantino"(Quinten) the rest when I catch up. Anyway I have a SCI(spinal cord injury) from a motocross crash and it really made me relive my early days of it, its actually tomorrow (9-10-2019) that will mark 8 years post SCI for myself and I don't ever want to see or know of any others that have dealt with it. Unfortunately no human being is immune to a SCI. Glad it was just some pinched nerves in the end, I haven't watched the next episode but I have seen one in the future with you spearing with your boy so I know you're alright in the end. I am not a patron but your adventure has me intrigued, wondering how accessible your boat or other cat sailboats would be to manual wheelchairs?
