Scientists are Teaching Machines to Predict Recovery Time From Sports-Related Concussions

When should an athlete return to the game after a head
injury? Most players need between seven and ten days, but others need more time —
creating a problem for clinicians and others. However, researchers at FAU’s
College of Engineering and Computer Science and collaborators have come up
with a clever solution — teach machines how to predict recovery time for sports-related concussions based on symptoms like headache, dizziness, and fatigue. This
study is a game changer for clinicians to develop individualized treatment for
injured athletes. Predicting recovery time with machine learning will also
help with realistic expectations of the student-athlete, as well as provide
important insight and perspective for parents, coaches, and teachers.
