Paracetamol for Low Back Pain (PACE)

Paracetamol for Low Back Pain (PACE)

Our primary interest was to see whether taking paracetamol will decrease the recovery time from acute low back pain. We recruited over 1600 patients from primary care centres in Sydney, Australia what we found was that taking paracetomol regularly, or taking it as required, or taking a placebo, did not make a difference on recovery rate from acute low back pain. The median time to recovery in our study, was about 16 to 17 days. We did find a result very surprising… Prior to conducting this study there had been no large, randomised control trials looking at the effect of paracetomol in acute low back pain. Paracetomol is universally recommended by all clinical treatment guidelines
internationally as the first choice medicine for patients with acute low back pain What our study showed was that there was no effect on paracetomol, meaning that treatment for acute low back pain should probably have more emphasis on advice that we give patients rather than on taking medication…
