Natural Ear Infection Remedies | Dr. Josh Axe

Hey guys, Dr. Axe here, Doctor of Functional
Medicine and Nutritionist. Today, I’m going to share with you how to cure an ear infection
fast. I know ear infections, whether it be adults or more commonly in children, are something
that… We don’t want children living with that pain,
dealing with that issue, but we also want to be all natural in that treatment and really
help support their body in healing in the correct way. There are four things you can
do to help heal an ear infection fast, and there are four terrific home remedies that
you want to consider. The first thing you want to do, and you want
to do internally in the ear, is doing garlic oil. You can buy garlic oil at almost any
health food store. Garlic actually has natural antiviral properties, and the majority of
the time when a child has an ear infection, it is a virus, not usually a bacteria. This is why antibiotics are completely ineffective
against ear infections. In fact, if you go to your primary care physician and they recommend
an antibiotic for an ear infection, I would consider if you should use that doctor or
not. Because they really probably don’t know what
they’re doing, unfortunately, because most ear infections are viral. Again, garlic oil,
a few drops in the ear is an effective treatment. The second thing you want to be doing is taking
something called tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca, not putting that in the ear
but rubbing it all around the outside of the ear. Tea tree oil has powerful antiseptic
properties. It’s been used for hundreds of years for the natural treatments of wounds
and infections. Again, I would do tea tree oil a few drops.
You can mix it with a little coconut oil as well. Rub it all over the ear and all around
the ear area. Tea tree oil, also known as melaleuca, is a very, very effective natural
treatment. The third treatment is actually chiropractic
care. Chiropractic has been shown to be very, very effective in the treatment of ear infections.
What can happen is the spine can misalign in the upper neck, and that can actually affect
the way the body heals and those nerve signals getting from the brain to that area and just
affect the overall healing. We’ve actually seen… Bring your child to
a wellness or a pediatric chiropractor. They can do a very light manual adjustment to the
child. Often sometimes they even just do some light tapping or use an instrument. That can
actually heal an ear infection quickly as well. Last but not least, you’ve got to get to the
root cause of what is causing the ear infection in the first place. One of the most common
things is food sensitivities. If your child is allergic to gluten, to certain things like
lactose or casein in dairy, to nuts, to citrus, to a load of things, that is actually one
of the biggest causes of ear infection today. What I would consider doing is getting your
child what’s called an I.G.G. food sensitivity test and actually getting them tested for
food allergies, food sensitivities, or food intolerances. That’s one of the big things
to look for. You can get those tests done. They’re fairly
inexpensive. Or, if you don’t want to do that, then just really watch and listen to their
body. Notice if they’re consuming certain types of conventional cow’s milk or gluten
that can cause the ear infections. But just in general for almost everybody out
there, if your child is getting ear infections, you should get them off gluten and off conventional
cow’s milk. If they want to do a little bit of goat’s milk yogurt, or something like that,
or goat’s cheese, most kids do fine with that form of dairy. Again, the conventional cow’s milk, the gluten
in grain products, those are probably the two biggest culprits when it comes to causing
ear infections. Again, remember those four things if you want
to help remedy your child’s ear infections. Number one, garlic oil, number two, tea tree
oil, number three, chiropractic care and number four, address those food allergies. If you
do that, I think you’re going to find that those ear infections don’t come back in the
first place and that they will heal very quickly. Hey, if you want to learn more about these

Although there is a lot of validity to the above statements he is saying, I think it pertains to more mild cases. I've had an ear infection for a while, and the deep swelling, pain, etc., was cause by bacteria in my ear after they had been clogged from ear wax for a long time. Antibiotics very much helped and were absolutely necessary due to the stage of the bacterial infection my ears had reached.

Holistic medicine and Western medicine must work together, and I think it's so important we never discredit one or the other in order to help each other.

Serrapeptase will clear catarrh in the eustacian tubes which may prevent the catarrh becoming infected.

care to explain? "garlic, placed in the ear, can help fight off an ear infection? Nope, it can’t. It’s a simple matter of anatomy. An “ear infection” – more properly called an “otitis media” – is an infection in the middle ear cavity, behind your eardrum. Unless you poke a garlic clove in far enough to pop the drum and push on through (do NOT do that), garlic placed in the ear cannot get to the site of the infection. Putting garlic in your ear to combat an ear infection is like putting oil next to your car engine for lubrication, or putting food near your mouth to eat it. To fight an infection, an antibiotic needs to be where the bacteria are. And an ear infection is internal, on the other side of your eardrum, where garlic or garlic oil pushed into the ear cannot reach."

I just wanted to say a big thank you because your advice cured the fluid build up problem I have been suffering on and off for about 5 weeks now, within the space of 10-12 hours. One of your sessions before bed then one or two after waking and the problem was gone I had gone to see a doctor, who insisted I had an ear Infection and quickly prescribed me antibiotics and various sprays to clear nasal congestion. She did not ask or listen when I explained I have post nasal drip and allergic asthma and so take a spray, mostly at night before sleeping and I sleep mostly on one side. My left side. And the fluid build up was also on left side. I decided after returning from my appointment to not take the anti biotics but to look into natural remedies. Then i found your video.. I just wanted to say a heart felt thank you.

Mine is a sharp stabbing pain that's over before i can react but it comes so randomly that the anticipation hurts more than the actual pain. I'm too scared to go to sleep. It actually seems to hurt more when I lay down. I've found a sitting position that seems to be working for now and managed to get an hour of real rest sleeping at my desk. It's been four days when will this be over!

I did the method you suggested, Teatree oil on the outside, and garlic oil mixed with warm olive oil on the inside. It actually made a difference, I ended up going to the emergency just in case, by the time I was there the pain was virtually gone, they did some tests and it ended up being viral not bacterial, and so I didn’t need an antibiotic fortunately.

half hydrogen peroxide half water 3 times a day into the ear. leave in for 5 min at a time, gone usually in 24 hours. most of the time immediately feels better. warm rag on ear helps too. for throat and nose, gargle salt water 3x daily. sniff salt water 3x daily then blow it out.

Garlic oil was a temporary fix for my middle ear infection.
It took away the pain for two hours.
Unfortunately I had to have surgery and a tube installed.

My 97 year old neighbour has been suffering from an ear infection for several months now. He was given antibiotics and ear drops during a hospital stay but to no avail. He was sent home and still suffers.
He says the issue is that his earbone is infected. I wonder whether it's safe to use a few drops of comfrey oil in his ear? Perhaps a combination of comfrey, garlic and mullein oil?

An inner ear infection is usually viral. A middle ear infection is usually bacterial and is the most common. So I don't think this guy knows what he is talking about.
Why no mention of filling up the ear canal with 3% hydrogen peroxide for 10 minutes and then draining? It's always worked for me.

Also chewing gum helps to drain a middle ear infection
