Hi. I’m Doctor Katy Morter with Morter Wellness Center in beautiful Bentonville Arkansas and I’m here to talk to you today about Headaches, what causes them and what you can do stop them and more importantly prevent them from happening in the first place.
Well, the first thing you need to realize about a headache is that it is a symptom. It is a symptom that your body is trying to tell you something is wrong, something out of balance You need to do something change it. This is the first thing you need to remember about any kind of pain. We’re going to talk about the three main causes of headaches and things that you can do to stop them. So, what does cause a headache. Well that can be different for a lot of people it falls under three main categories. The first one is inflammation. Just like when you sprain your ankle and it swells up. When you hurt yourself, when there is something that is hurting your body or damaging your body inflammation occurs and it can be simple as allergies – food allergies or seasonal allergies cause inflammation. Or it can be an accident something that damages your body phycically so inflammation develops can create pain which can lead to a headache. Now, a second reason is decreased blood flow to the brain. The brain is a huge oxygen and glucose hog. Glucose is the sugar in your blood – your blood sugar so
decreased blood flow to the brain then the brain starts telling you, “Hey, I’m not getting enough oxygen, I’m not getting enough food. And it’s going to start to hurt. In fact, migraines are typical of this. so when that pounding – BOOM BOOM, BOOM happens That’s actually decreased in the blood flow to the brain which causes the blood vessels to say, “I need to open up and get some food and oxygen to this sucker. It’s kind of important. So the blood vessels open up – there’s inflammation already there and so when they open up, so every time the heart beats – BOOM, BOOM, BOOM – you feel that – pounding. The third type probably the most common reason for a headache is tension. And there’s two types of tension: physical tension and there’s emotional
tension. Now physical tension that’s when your muscles are tight and tense. This can happen from an accident, or it could happen from what you do every day, maybe sleeping in a wrong position or just sitting at a computer with your hand on a mouse, looking up, shoulders up by your ears, that’s going to cause some muscle imbalances and muscle tension that leads to a headache.
The second type, the emotional tension, the stress that is probably the most common reason for a headache. The person or the
thing that is a pain in your neck, literally becomes a pain in your neck and in your head. Now what can you do about it. Well the first thing – Drink Water!
Dehydration leads to some inflammation, some muscle tension and causes decreased blood flow. So drink some water. The second thing: eat. Falling blood sugar can trigger Third: (takes a deep breath in) a nice deep breath. That puts you into a more relaxed state. longer you can stay breathing (deeply), the more you can be in a healing and relaxed mode. Now the fourth thing, and this is where I come in I’m a Chiropractor and what we do is assess how the body is imbalanced and help the body get back into balance so that symptoms like headaches don’t occur. Specifically for headaches, we look at Morter Wellness Center at two different things we look at the Atlas, the very top bone in the spine, and how it’s alignment can be off and trigger the muscle tension,
the inflammation, the decreased blood flow all three of those things. Put the atlas back into alignment and guess what, the body can work properly. There’s no need for a headache. The second way we look at this, the second way we help to get you back into balance is look at the emotional causes of a headache the emotional stress and tension that can trigger a headache.
