Motion Sickness – What is it?

Motion Sickness – What is it?

So, you’ve just begun your road trip with some friends when you decide to read a book in the back seat. But after only moments of reading, you start feeling dizzy, fatigued and nauseous. Sounds like motion sickness… The surprising truth is that about 30 percent of the population experiences motion sickness with over 66 percent of people experiencing it in extreme conditions. This happens when your eyes and inner ear are sending different signals to the brain. The vestibular system inside your ear contributes to balance and spatial orientation. Tiny hairs inside the canal detect the movement of a fluid inside it allowing you to orient yourself. If you lean to the side, the fluid moves and signals are sent to your brain to help you understand this. But oftentimes, in a car, on a boat, or in the IMAX theatre your vestibular system is transmitting a different signal from your other senses. In the case of your car, your eyes see that everything in the car is seemingly stationary, particularly when you stare at a book. But your ears feel the movement of the car. Conversely, in the IMAX theatre, your eyes see a lot of motion while your ear is experiencing very little movement at all. This mismatch of signals tells the brain something’s wrong. So why does it induce vomiting? The leading theory suggests that, evolutionarily, if the input signals from your ears and eyes weren’t matching, you’d likely ingested a neurotoxin. The easiest way to get rid of it? Throw it up. This was a fairly useful and accurate system before the advent of technology and advanced transportation. Too bad the brain never got the memo. Is there a remedy to it? Because I suffer badly from this every time I travel, even when I am not reading.

I used to get motion sickness when I was a little girl, but it disappeared as a teenager. I couldn't even ride the bus, because I'd vomit. It was a terrible feeling!! There were times when I even puked inside the bus. And, forget about even taking a long ride to another city!! But, my mom took me to the doctor at age 4, and the doctor said I had to include more fruit in my diet. I did, and I saw a big improvement as I got older. I also started exercizing & meditating too. Now I'm in my 30s, and that's all in the past. So, to you that are still getting motion sickness, include more fruit in your diet, meditating & exercizing. That should definitely help. Good luck!!!??

Well I've never been motion sick before, but my friends have. One time there was a school trip to Catalina (a channel island) and the trip was an 1 and 30 minutes. My friend legit barfed 7 times, and she told me she got seasick. I just got confused because legit if I'm in car, plane, bus, boat, ETC I don't get sick just never. Even if it smells good, or bad. But there was this time where I was with my friend, and we were going up the elevator for no reason and for fun while my parents were shopping. We went up like more than 30 times. But then, my friend got motion sick because of an elevator. And she throws up in an elevator… AN ELEVATOR!

I'm the best companion to drive with. It doesn't matter how fast or slow ur going, it doesn't matter the smell, it doesnt matter if I'm in the front or backseat. Doesn't matter if it's downhill or uphill. Doesn't matter if I'm on a boat, plane, train, roller coaster, swings ETC. I will never get motion sick. Everybody else around me does, even my crush, so I just sit there with a smile on my face cuz i know that'll never happen to me 🙂

I have horrible sicknesses during travels (ESPECIALLY plane). When I sit in the car, I immediately feel queasy. But some things have stopped me from vomiting too much.

-If it’s raining, I listen and glance at the raindrops hit the windows. It calms me down a bit.

-Turning the AC all the way to the coldest level. Again, it calms me.

-(Probably only works for me) Bring at least four people in total on the trip, I feel like when talking and joking to them I get distracted from my sickness.

-Don’t take off glasses (if you have them). When I take off my glasses, I get a horrible pounding sensation in my eye and head area, this makes me feel uncomfortable so I vomit.

Some people confuse car sickness and motion sickness. In both the cases open your car window. Some people prefer to shut the windows and turn on the AC. If you have sickness and you do that your sickness can get even worse. Sit near window seat if possible. Try eating fennel seeds every time you get any sickness trust me it works wonders. Hopefully you'll benefit

See.. I get car sick because I’m in a really tiny space and it’s uncomfortable. Plus the smell of the car makes me sick. I’m fine in a bus cause it’s open and has more space.

For a car a good thing to do is close your eyes and try to relax so you don’t see the signals and only use the inner ear

Ohhh, so I don't get motion sick due to my brain being flexible with understanding the conflicting signals, my good spacial awareness/intelligence must be the main factor there.

Still, need to see if people who get motion sick get lost easily or have issues keeping track of time.
