Migraine Success Secrets #8 “Blood Sugar”

Hi, it’s Dr. McCarthy and today we’re going to
talk about migraines success secret number eight. Today we’re going to be talking about
blood sugar. The first thing I say, the first thing people think when I say
blood sugar is diabetes and a lot of times patients will react that way when
I say, well you’ve got probably blood sugar, they say oh I don’t have diabetes I’ve been
checked out well that’s just like the the common terminology that the general
public knows, what we talk about is a fancy term called dysglycemia
basically what that means is your blood sugar goes too high and too low and too
high and too low throughout the course of the day and that’s a really dangerous
situation, if you see up here I’ve drawn like a roller coaster and that’s what it
looks like many times with the way people eat the standard American diet,
you eat a lot of food, your blood glucose goes way high and then a couple hours
later plummets and that’s when you start to feel shaky or jittery and then it
goes to high after you eat your Mac whoppers and your diet cokes and
whatever. You’ve got to learn how to balance the blood sugar, your blood sugar should throughout the course the day run between 85 and 99 all day, every
day, we teach our patients how to get your blood sugar in that fine area,
85 to 99. One of the issues is when the blood sugar goes up
and down throughout the course of the day, the first place where you start to
see symptoms is in the function of your brain, you’re dealing with migraine
headaches, if your blood sugar is affecting the way your brain functions
that’s got to be handled if you want to get rid of your migraines. First thing we
talk about is hypoglycemia, your brain only weighs about 4 or 5 pounds but it
sucks up like one third of your blood sugar. So if your blood sugar starts
going too low that’s a condition called hypoglycemia, your brain is the first
place to suffer, it sends out the alarm, it sends out the stress alarm, do
something, get me blood sugar, get it to me quick so your body will respond in a
stress, in an alarm state, that can trigger, a migraine. Lots of our migraine
patients will say, yeah if I don’t eat for you know 3 or 4 hours my blood sugar
drops low, I feel that headache coming on, you’ve got to learn how to fix that.
The flip side of that is insulin resistance, when your blood sugar is too high, eventually the cells in your body become resistant to insulin and insulin
is what carries the glucose into the cell and if your cells become
insulin resistant then the glucose can’t get in and that’s a really bad situation
that your blood sugar gets way too high and that starts moving you down the road
towards diabetes so you see that can be really bad too, if you can’t get the blood
sugar into the nerve cells into the blood vessel cells then your body could
respond again with a migraine attack. So if you’re living with the
rollercoaster, dysglycemia, you’re dealing with both hypoglycemia, which can
cause your migraines and insulin resistance, which can cause your
migraines if you’ve got both that’s a really bad situation. You’ve got to call
our office now and let me help you get off the blood sugar rollercoaster, don’t
suffer with another migraine. Thanks!
