Kids and Football Concussions: What to Expect after the Tackle

HERE IN TEXAS, SAYING FOOTBALL IS BIG IS LIKE
SAYING A TORNADO IS A BIT WINDY. “It’s about as big as the state. It’s pretty darn big. It is taken very seriously.” DOCTOR DAVID LEIFER IS A RADIOLOGIST WHO LOOKS
FOR CONCUSSIONS. HE’S SEEING MORE KIDS THESE DAYS, HIGH SCHOOL
— AND YOUNGER — WHO WERE HURT IN THE GAME. “He actually got hit from behind and we didn’t
realize that he had a concussion. Because when it did happen, he kind of just
did his normal thing, kind of shook it off.” WATCHING YOUR CHILD TAKE A HIT IS HARD … ESPECIALLY
WHEN YOU KNOW A THING OR TWO ABOUT CONCUSSIONS LIKE COACH JOHNATHAN MUMPHREY WHO PLAYED DIVISION
1 FOOTBALL AT SMU. “Back when I played, we led with our head,
we just crashed, we had no technique, no fundamentals on how they really want us to tackle. We just try to knock the guy out back in the
early 90’s.” IT’S A DIFFERENT STORY TODAY … WITH STRICT
CONCUSSION PROTOCOLS. “We even think the kid, even though he’s
telling us that he can go, that if we’re thinking that they’re a little dazed, we’re
pulling them out and taking them to a concussion protocol.” IF THE HIT IS HARD … YOUR PLAYER MAY NEED
IMAGING. BOTH CT AND MRI ARE USED TO LOOK FOR CONCUSSION. “Usually the CT scan is used early on so someone
who literally just had an injury or within say a few days. After that if they have recurring symptoms,
they usually end up seeing a neurologist and end up getting an MRI.” DOCTOR LEIFER SAYS HE’S LOOKING FOR A HEMMORRHAGE
IN THE BRAIN … BECAUSE BLOOD ITSELF IS TOXIC … CAUSING INFLAMMATION WHEN IT LEAKS INTO
THE BRAIN TISSUE. WHEN COACH MUMPHREY’S OWN SON WAS HURT ON
THE FIELD … “My son, first game, first time playing tackle
football runs down, get clipped, get turned over on a kickoff– immediately what we had
to do was take him to go get scanned.” “I was recommended CDI for their quality, their
service and the people there were so great. So that’s what took us to CDI.” “First of all they’re in good hands. I’m going to take care of their baby. We try and keep the scan times minimum since
they are kiddos. Get them in and out as quickly as we can.” AT CDI … WE TAKE HEAD INJURIES AS SERIOUSLY
AS YOU DO. BECAUSE WE KNOW WITH THE RIGHT IMAGES, YOU
CAN MAKE THE RIGHT CALL. “This country’s based on football, but the
long-term, the health of your loved one is what’s most important.”
