How to treat lower back spasms  | Total Performance Physical Therapy | 215.997.9898

Hello I’m Doctor Heather Moore owner of
Total Performance Physical Therapy. Today we’re going to talk about exercises
if you feel a lower back spasm so I’m sure if you’re watching this you’ve gone down
and pick up something on the floor and you wind up getting stuck and you’re in this
position and you’re not quite sure what to do. Unfortunately most people handles this by
getting themselves over the couch and laying there for the rest of the day despite the
intuition and thinking if that’s what should be done it’s actually more of the worst
things that can be done. If you find yourself in spasm and you find
yourself in this crooked position what you want to do is you want to try and move, most
often time the spasm is muscle related, that muscle needs blood to go to the muscle to
loosen up. If you lay down and you stand all day there
is no blood flowing. The blood flow is very minimal you’re not
using the muscle as a natural pump, if you wind up getting stuck I know it’s the last
thing you want to do is move, what I recommend doing is when timing in to a hot shower and
stand down, as you’re standing there and as you’re hunched over all you need to do
is just start gently by arching your back and then letting it go you can do this laying
down also, if you’re in a position when you’re laying on a couch you can do this
where you’re just arching and relaxing, arching and relaxing. The next exercise that you want to try to
do is pulling either one or both knees up to your chest, so you’re just going to lay
down and pull one knee up and lay back nice and easy, this may be too difficult that way
you still both knees nice and easy and then back down okay, there’s really no reps or
sets for this if you’re just too spasm you want to do this as many times as you can until
the muscles stops spasming. The other good thing that you can do is do
a lot of walking, I’m not talking about aggressive walking just walking around your
house nice and easy that’s going to get the blood to flow, that’s going to allow
that muscles to loosen up on it’s own. The worst thing you can do is sit down and
not do anything, you want to make sure that you’re really moving and you’re really
