How to avoid neck pain in winter

Hi Coby here, Osteopath at SootheClinic.Com your online osteopathic clinic so I’m just here with a top tip for you
because it is the end of coming into the end of October and the weather’s
starting to get colder and in the world of back pain and Osteopathy we see a lot
of lot more influx really in the winter because your muscles start tightening up
because to interject you from the cold you start you don’t realize it but you
start tightening that trapezius moves neck muscles and those back muscles just
to kind of warm up and that creates an increase in tension it’s pretty simple
it’s not too complicated we see a lot of like gardening injuries in the autumn
people doing their gardening which they’ve been doing all through the
summer and then suddenly doing the same activities causes you strains aches and
pains so what we need to do at this time of year is just look at lots of ways
that you can start reducing that muscle tension so you can’t stop yourself
tightening up although that would be a good start just to be aware of the fact
that you’re holding yourself in a more tense way so let’s start with basics so
I would suggest if those of you who are susceptible to neck pain you just start
wearing a scarf in a minute it’s a little bit cold just pop a little scarf
on even a lightweight scarf and just to protect you from the cold and that will
have an effect on minimizing your neck pain also I would suggest that you if
possible do a few stretches in the morning you know if you’re susceptible
to low back pain then do some low back stretches in the morning if you’re
susceptible to upper back pain and upper back stretches and neck pain or
headaches in particular do some neck stretches you know just some even just
simple neck stretches like just dropping your head to one side holding it for 30
seconds that really does put a huge stretch through the neck muscles there
and to the other side just using the weight of your head to lengthen that
muscle and I love this one diagonally forward there
right down the back of these muscles here these muscles are what causes your
tension headaches and then diagonally to the opposite direction they’re
stretching out those those back muscles there that’s really great if it sounds
too simple to be true but it really is if you can stretch out your muscles at
the beginning of the day then you have a lot you have longer muscles literally so
they have further to tighten before they cause you pain so if we’re looking at
just and then at the end of the day just reset your muscle lengths as well
stretch out at the end and just get them back to their normal length because back
pain neck pain is all about muscle tension and what you can do to control
it anything else seconds just I think that’s it for now so wear a scarf and do
your stretches in the morning and just be aware of your your tension levels
during the day so if you feel yourself tensing up just consciously relax take a
deep breath and just relax all your muscles alright
I hope that’s helpful guys have a great day buh bye
