Concussion – Cynthia’s Story

Concussion – Cynthia’s Story

I’m Cynthia Williams, and I had a fall from
a horse, and that’s how I got my concussion. I was riding the horse, and the horse got
spooked at something and bucked me off and left me out in the field, and so I was unconscious
for a little while, and the horse ran home, so I had to get home to him. I had my phone on me to call for help, but
I couldn’t remember how to use it. I think that was probably my first sign that maybe
something was wrong. I was starting to have trouble coming up with
words, and I felt like, “Well, maybe, I just hit my head really hard. I had a helmet on, so I’m sure I’m fine. I’ve had falls before from horses and had
a helmet on and I recovered, so I just assumed I’d be fine. I’m in school. I take online classes, so I thought, I’ll
just real quick summarize an article, and when I got done typing, I looked back at the
computer, and there was really about two words that made sense. And so I burst into tears and thought, you
know, I’m hurt. Something’s wrong. So called my doctor. He got me in that morning. He immediately referred me to the Illinois
Neurological Institute to the Concussion Clinic, and Cristin saw me the next day, and she was
wonderful. She assured me, you know, all the things you’re
going through right now are normal, you’re going to get better, but we have to do – there’s
therapy you’re going to have to do. I was so impressed with the scientific approach
that they have at the Concussion Clinic. I had to sit for 60 minutes in a dark room
doing nothing. No phone, no TV – and rest my brain. They had me in speech therapy and physical
therapy. Speech therapy was almost more frustrating
than physical therapy because it was really obvious how hurt I was. Overall, my experience with INI was very positive. I can’t thank them enough for what they did. I’ve taken two classes online for my Master’s
in Nursing. Both of my classes I have a 98% in both of
those, and I’m pretty – I hate to sound like I’m bragging, but man, like, I couldn’t type
11 months ago, I couldn’t do that, and now I can, so I’m so grateful that God has healed
me and for the support from INI that has helped me.
