4 Misconceptions About the Flu | What the Stuff?!

– Newsflash! The stomach
flu isn’t the flu, it’s just what you tell your
boss, when you’re hungover. Science! (calming guitar music) Each year, infection by the
influenza virus hospitalizes more than 200,000 Americans alone. But why do so many people fall so ill? In this case, what you
don’t know can hurt you. So let’s clear up some
misconceptions about the flu. There’s a notion among
grandmothers everywhere that going out in cold
weather will give you the flu. Winter is, indeed, peak flu season, but experts think it’s our tendency to actually stay indoors
during these months that gets us sick. When you share air and surfaces with gross, infected people, you’re more likely to be exposed yourself. – Oh my, oh my god! Oh my god! Oh my god! Oh yea. Yea, yea. Oh my god! – Another myth is that the flu
vaccine can give you the flu. Ok, listen, injected flu vaccines
do not use active viruses. They use either virus proteins
or inactivated viruses, which have been chemically murdered, meaning there’s just
enough virus protein left to trick your immune system into thinking there’s
a threat and attacking. The white blood cells that
your body makes in the future will thus be primed to attack any invader bearing those proteins. But the crippled viruses can’t reproduce, so they can’t infect you. In a horrifying twist,
nasal spray vaccines do contain live viruses, but they’re modified so
that they can’t survive at your normal body temperature. They can, thus, only cause infection in your relatively cool nostrils, which may give you a couple
of days of the sniffles before your immune system clears them out. Ok, the flu vaccine
doesn’t work all the time. First of all, it’s most
likely to be effective in younger, healthier people. Second, there’s the question of how well this year’s vaccine
will match with the flu strain, or strains, that emerge as threats. It’s a huge challenge. Influenza isn’t a chunk of
unchanging genetic code. Different strains evolve all the time, and more than one strain can
spread in a single season. Every year, the vaccine is concocted from three or four strains that researchers estimate
will be the most active, based on data from
patients around the world. – That’s a pretty stupid
thing to do during flu season. – I bet she’s getting the tongue. – And then there’s the idea that the flu is no worse
than the common cold. The symptoms are similar, but virulent strains of the
flu have killed millions. The flu is harder to fight. It weakens your body and occupies your immune
system’s attention, making you susceptible to other diseases, like bacterial pneumonia and pre-existing conditions
like heart disease. And what’s worse? The people most in danger
from flu complications often can’t receive
the flu vaccine at all. Their immune systems can’t handle even inactive or weak viruses, which is why doctors and
public health officials urge healthy people to help
their fellow humans out and get vaccinated. If you don’t get the flu, you can’t spread it to
someone more vulnerable to its effects. So tell me, have you gotten the flu in the past couple of years? And remember, the stomach
flu doesn’t count. You can learn why in our article, “Ten Misconceptions about the Flu” on howstuffworks.com. – Now we’re getting to flu season here, and I just wanted to give
every body a head’s up as to what to expect
with getting a flu shot. I’m always really good about knowing when I’m about to get sick, and as of yet, I have not experienced any physical side effects. None, at all. I would definitely see
that coming a mile away, so stay tuned. I’ll post on here if
anything weird starts to and

Number 1 is wrong! They recently performed a study and found people actually are more susceptible to the flu when cold.

Nope, I have not had true influenza for many, many years. In fact, in adulthood, I had it ONCE. My son was just a little guy, and my daughter wasn't yet born, so we're talking 24 years ago or there about. And I do NOT permit the mad scientists to experiment on me with flu vaccines. Here's the truth: it is "flu season", and you are sick. You go to the doctor. Because you have flu symptoms, and because it is flu season, the doctor sends you home with a diagnosis of "influenza". BUT! When the CDC analyzes the swabs sent in that carry a presumptive influenza diagnosis, only about 16% of them actually culture an influenza virus. That means that around 84% of you DO NOT HAVE INFLUENZA!!!! That is HUGE! And these stats about 30,000 people dying of flu annually is also bogus. What they are really counting are people who die from pneumonia, sepsis, etc that are concurrent with presumed influenza (which most of them didn't have to begin with anyway!). As for the "flu shots cannot give you the flu" — odd, but if you read the package insert, right there it is. You really can end up with influenza from the flu shot. And speaking of the package insert, it tells you all sorts of things about the horrible possibilities of accepting that flu shot. I could go on and on about this topic, but I won't. Those of you who understand how awful vaccination is already know these things. And those of you who love vaccination will tell me that I am an idiot. Neither one of us will persuade the other.

After hearing the joke at the beginning of the video, I get the feeling that she is the type of person who might actually do that. Most people wouldn't even think of doing something like that, and hence wouldn't think of joking about it either.

People should really do their homework and look at the source http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov This video cited no sources which is trying to push the notion just because they said it it must be true.

Uh oh. How Stuff Works is working with the government to spread lies about vaccines! They can tell us all they want that it doesn't get you sick, but it does! All those studies were the works of the illuminati! There are no real scientific studies that claim the shot is safe!! And I don't care if I've never seen it myself, but vaccines cause autism! I'd rather have my child dead than for them to be autistic! I'm going to go put on my tinfoil hat and hide in my zombie apocalypse bunker now… See you in 20 years.

A simple fact: washing hands before meals helps a lot! And I mean "A LOT"!

I never have the flu because of that simple reason. Most of people I know, co workers, daughter, doesn't wash their hands before meals. And they get the flu every years.

I use to get bronchitis and pneumonia often until I took the Pneumonia vaccine 18 years ago. since that time I haven't had this problem. But I suggest that everyone takes a chance of have severe reactions to vaccines and should not take a vaccine unless they are actually vulnerable to being sic

I have gotten the flu shot many times, and I have never gotten it. All of the people in the comments who complain about getting the flu after the vaccine are probably the same people who use a vaccine as an excuse to not wash their hands.

being in the cold does compromise your immune system because your body is TRYING TO STAY WARM, how fucking hard is that to comprehend? Also, I hope all you anti vaccine dumb fucks all get tetanus and you thrive in pain until your bones break.

In my opinion, flu shot isn't an absolute necessity when you're a young, healthy adult. It becomes much more of a necessity when you're old/elderly.

I honestly don't know why people make a big deal about the flue. Get the yearly shot, or not. It's your choice. If you get sick from anything, deal with it, or not, that's your choice. Have some soup, or not. Take NyQuil, or not. Your body, your choice, and I wish you well.

Whatever you do, stop talking about the flue. It doesn't matter. Just STFU. If big Pharma wanted to solve it, they would, instantly. But they get to much money to make ethics a priority, so do what you feel is best for yourself and your fact-dependent situation.
